What the work looks like.

Scanning a marketplace's slabs one at a time is dull for the first hour and interesting after that. The interesting part is not the cards. It is the moment the scanner reads a certificate number the system has already seen.

Four times that day the number came up twice. Two slabs, one certificate. Sometimes a re-holder, sometimes a data entry made twice, once something we could not explain and said so. Each one went on the report with both photographs.

The client did not need us to decide what the duplicates meant. They needed to know they existed, with evidence, from someone with no reason to soften it. That is the whole service in one line.

A retained sample is a bag of product nobody wants to open. Regulation says keep one from every batch for a year past its shelf life. Most brands keep it at the factory, which is the one place a dispute with the factory makes it worthless.

Ours arrive at receiving with the lot, get a sealed bag, a label with the lot number and expiry, and a shelf position. Then they sit. The register tells the brand what is on the shelf and when each lot ages out, and the only time a bag moves is when someone writes to ask for it.

It is the quietest thing we do, and the one clients thank us for most when a complaint lands and the sample is where the register says it is.

A brand needed shipping cartons to an exact size and board grade and had no purchasing team in the country. The manufacturer quoted. Two alternates quoted. The quotes went to the brand side by side, with the sample carton measured and photographed.

They approved one line. We bought it, received it against the specification, and billed it through at cost with the fee stated. The buy sheet is one page.

The lesson was not about cartons. It was that the same discipline that applies to a single graded card applies to a pallet of corrugated, and clients notice when it does.

The first question at a factory is never about the product. It is which sample the run will be judged against, and whether everyone agrees on it before the line starts. Settle that and most of what follows is counting and photographs.

During the run the job is to be present at the points that matter, raise anything off the same day while it can still be fixed, and stay out of the way otherwise. Before shipment, a random sample to a named standard, every finding photographed, and a signed report the day the inspection ends.

We do not certify the factory and we do not soften a finding. The brand decides whether it ships. Our job is to make sure the decision is made on evidence.
