Five weeks when a Beckett slab could not be checked

Beckett's cert lookup went offline on 9 September and came back on 15 October. A slab sold in between carried a number nobody could check.

In brief

Beckett's website and app went offline on 9 September 2026 at about 7 p.m. Central, CardLines reported. The BGS and BAS cert lookups and the population reports went with them. On 2 October Beckett said it had detected "suspicious technical activity" during planned upgrades and had taken its platforms offline as a precaution. It said it had found no evidence that sensitive customer data was affected.

The first phase of the restoration went live on 15 October. It brought back customer accounts, the submission center, the population reports and both cert lookups. The price guide, marketplace and dealer tools are still offline, with no published date. Consumer demand held through the outage: US retail and food services sales were $745.0 billion in September, up 0.8% on August and 6.3% on a year earlier, the Census Bureau's advance estimate of 15 October shows.

What it turns on

  • A number with nothing behind it. For about five weeks a BGS label could not be matched to Beckett's own record of the card, grade and subgrades.
  • Trading did not stop. Slabs kept changing hands while the lookup was down. Pregrade's 18 October guide says to re-check any bought in that window.
  • Restored in parts. Cert lookups and population reports returned on 15 October. Pricing and marketplace tools are in a later phase, with no date.

What we do about it

  1. 01Keep the lookup on the record. The grader's lookup result, dated and captured, kept with the cert number and photographs of the label.
  2. 02Say when it could not be checked. If the lookup is down, the record says unverified, with the date tried. It does not borrow the label's word for it.
  3. 03Re-check when it returns. Every item taken in during an outage is looked up again once the grader's record is back, and the result is added.
  4. 04Match the card, not just the number. Card, grade and subgrades on the lookup compared with the slab in hand, photographed before it moves.
