The week's records each rested on the record behind the item
A coin, a jersey and a restored comic set new marks this week. Each price leaned on a grade, a game or a label.
In brief
Three categories set marks this week. On 9 October a 1792 half disme graded PCGS MS68 sold at Heritage for $2.928 million, a record for the type. On 12 October Hunt Auctions announced a $14 million private sale of Michael Jordan's jersey from Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals. On 16 October a restored Action Comics No. 1, CGC 9.0 with a restored label, sold privately through ComicConnect for $1.3 million.
Watches moved more quietly. The WatchCharts overall market measure rose 1.2% in the third quarter, as reported on 15 October. We found no card or rip platform figure this week that we could read and date ourselves, so neither is summarised here.
What it turns on
- A grade that stands alone. Heritage says the half disme is the only one PCGS has graded MS68. The previous record for the type was $1.41 million in 2013.
- A game, not just a player. The jersey is tied to one Finals game. Hunt says the Bulls sold it to a collector in 2003 and it has changed hands once since.
- Restoration on the label. The comic is a restored copy, and the grade label says so. It is reported as the first restored copy of the book to pass $1 million.
What we do about it
- 01Hold the grade on the record. The cert number, the grader and a photograph of the label, checked against the grader's own lookup.
- 02Tie game use to evidence. Photo matches, letters and the chain of owners, each dated, kept with the item's record.
- 03Write down what was changed. Restoration, swapped parts or a new dial, recorded as found, with photographs.
- 04Keep the chain of custody. Every hand-off logged, so the item on the shelf is the item on the record.
