On a $3.24 million one-of-one, the grade was the least of four claims

A 2025 Topps Dynasty Black Shohei Ohtani Logoman card, numbered one of one and graded PSA 9, sold at Fanatics Collect on 23 October 2026. The patch, the signature, the serial and the grade are four separate claims. Only the grade is on the slab.

In brief

Sports Illustrated reported on 26 October 2026 that a 2025 Topps MLB MVP The Game Dynasty Black Shohei Ohtani MLB Logoman Patch Auto, numbered one of one and graded PSA 9, sold for $3.24 million through Fanatics Collect's Premier Auction on 23 October. Men's Journal counted 52 bids. The reports describe the patch as a Logoman worn by Ohtani in Game 4 of the 2025 National League Championship Series, the game in which he struck out ten batters and hit three home runs. None of the pages we read says who authenticated the patch, names the consignor, or says whether the figure includes the buyer's premium. The Short Print newsletter wrote on 30 October that the card's first owner pulled it in an online break in March 2026. In the same week's top five, an unscratched redemption for a 2025 Topps Motif Cooper Flagg Logoman one of one sold for $2.16 million on 23 October, and a restored T206 Honus Wagner labelled PSA Authentic sold at Heritage for $1.98 million on 24 October.

The card makes four claims. The serial says Topps printed one. The signature says Ohtani signed it, and that claim is certified by the manufacturer, not by the grader. The patch says the cloth came from a jersey worn in a named game, and that claim rests on whoever authenticated the jersey before it was cut. The grade says PSA judged the card's condition a 9 on its scale. Only the last claim is on the slab, and on a one-of-one there is no second copy to grade higher, so the grade describes condition and nothing about scarcity. For the economy, the Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75 to 4 percent on 28 October 2026, with two members preferring a quarter-point rise. The 10-year Treasury yield was 4.94% on 30 October, against 5.24% on 1 October, US Treasury data show. The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported on 29 October that consumer spending rose 0.5 percent in September in current dollars and by less than 0.1 percent after prices, with the PCE price index 3.6 percent above a year earlier.

What it turns on

  • Four claims, four keepers. The serial and the signature rest on Topps. The game-worn patch rests on whoever authenticated the jersey before it was cut. The grade rests on PSA. A buyer checks four records, not one.
  • A redemption is a claim on a card not yet in hand. The $2.16 million Cooper Flagg lot was an unscratched redemption. What sold is the manufacturer's promise to deliver the card, on the manufacturer's terms and timetable.
  • Restored is written on the label. The Wagner's slab reads PSA Authentic, Restored. The grader found work on the card and said so instead of giving a number. The label carried the disclosure to every bidder.

What we do about it

  1. 01Record each claim with its keeper. Serial, signature certification, patch statement and grade, each with the party that made it and the date it was checked.
  2. 02Hold the cert and the card back together. The cert number, the grader's photographs and the printed text on the back of the card, which is where the patch and the signature are described.
  3. 03Carry the route to sale. Pull, grading submission, consignment and auction close, with dates and lot numbers. A reported origin that cannot be checked is recorded as reported, not as fact.
  4. 04Write the price as it was reported. The figure, the venue, the close date and whether the buyer's premium is included, or a note that the report did not say. Sports Illustrated's headline reads $3.42M and its text $3.24M. The record keeps the figure the sale page shows and notes the discrepancy.
